Almonds for Weight Loss

This month we’ll be focusing on the Aussie almond! We use this wonderful nut in our Berry Goddess and Green Dream smoothie blends. It has numerous health benefits and contains healthy fats, plant protein, vitamin E, magnesium and fibre.

A recent study published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that when people include nuts in their diet, they are more likely to reduce weight gain and lower the risk of being overweight or obese. This was a five year study that looked at data from more than 373,000 Europeans aged 25 to 70 years of age.

The study concluded that participants only gained an average of 2.1 kilograms during the five-year period of the study. Also, interestedly enough, participants that ate the most nuts not only had less weight gain than those that abstained from nuts, but their chances of becoming overweight or obese were 5 percent lower. Source: PubMed -

The mighty Almond also assists with:

  • Heart health
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Improving brain efficiency
  • Regulating blood pressure
  • Controlling blood sugar levels
  • Strengthening the immune system – a strong immune system stops disease in its tracks!

And last but not least, here are some fun facts about our friend the Almond:

  • Almonds are the edible seeds of the almond tree.
  • They are native to the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent and North Africa.
  • They were first introduced to Australia in 1836.
  • Almonds grow best in Mediterranean climates with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
  • The almond tree has an average life span of 20-25 years.
  • Almonds are referred to as nuts although they are not true nuts from a botanical point of view. The almond is botanically a stone fruit related to the cherry, the plum, the peach and the apricot.

So grab a handful of almonds or whip up a Berry Goddess smoothie today! You won't be sorry!
